In addition to martial arts classes, the Chapel Hill Quest Center is home to an intense fitness training program.  We offer classes in cardio-kickboxing, strength & conditioning, and yoga, which together can provide a complete physical regimen for people of all fitness levels and backgrounds.  The fitness program is included in our martial arts tuition, or you can sign up for just the fitness program at a reduced rate.  More information on the individual classes is provided below!

Cardio-Kickboxing

Cardio-Kickboxing is an exciting, high-intensity workout that combines elements of boxing, Thai boxing, and aerobics to create the ultimate workout.  The first 10 minutes of class consist of a warm-up that is different every class, including (but not limited to!)  jump-roping, medicine balls, push-ups, abdominal exercises, jogging, and stretching to get your body warmed up for the fast-paced bag work to follow.  During the next 30 minutes of class you will hit a heavy bag with realistic kickboxing combinations, working both your upper and lower body.  The last 5 minutes of class are devoted to light exercises to strengthen and stretch your muscles and to cool down.  In addition to a full-body workout that develops your speed, power, endurance, flexibility, and strength, you will also learn basic self-defense techniques.

You do not have to have any experience in kickboxing, or any martial art whatsoever, to take these classes!  Our instructors will make sure that you understand the punching and kicking combinations and will work with you to make sure you use correct form and technique.

Gloves are required for this class.  We have loaner pairs that you can use for your first couple of classes, but we highly recommend getting your own gloves after the first few classes, as you and the gloves do get very sweaty in class!

Strength & Conditioning

Strength & Conditioning is the Quest Center’s functional strength training program.  Rather than just lifting weights to isolate muscles for aesthetic purposes, this training program targets full-body exercises that are meant to build the muscles and movements that are functional in both martial arts and in daily life.

The workouts vary in speed, intensity, duration, and frequency to help you break through training plateaus and improve your strength and cardiovascular conditioning.  For example, one workout might include multiple sets of plyometric pushups (clap pushups), whereas another workout might include a two minute timed series of pushups (the maximum number of pushups you can complete in two minutes).  No class is the same, and you never know what the class will entail until you arrive and get started.

If you have any physical limitations (for example, bad knees or back problems) the instructors can always tweak the exercises for you so that  you can still train safely.  You can choose the intensity of each class by going up or down in weights or speed, depending on your individual needs for the day.

Strength & Conditioning will improve your muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, explosive power, coordination and flexibility – we guarantee it!

Yoga

The Quest Center offers yoga classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9am, as well as at 7:30am on Mondays and Wednesdays for the early risers!  These classes are led by John Acree, RYT.  Depending on individual requests, each class can be tailored to target specific needs, from a more intense and energizing practice to a calmer, more meditative feel.

Classes start with warm-ups to prepare the muscles and joints for more intense stretches.  The class then moves into a mix of flows and individual postures, which are sometimes very general and sometimes target specific muscle groups.  Class always ends with a short relaxation, and questions and requests are always welcome during class.

These classes are suitable for everyone, from beginners to experienced yogis.  Props are used to help everyone find the variation appropriate for them in the moment.
