Why Continued Training—and Learning from Experts—Matters

Why Continued Training—and Learning from Experts—Matters

At Quest Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense, we believe in training that never stops. Whether you're a beginner learning to breakfall or a black belt refining your timing, the path forward is always paved with growth. But growth doesn’t happen in a vacuum—it happens when we actively seek out high-level guidance to help us through our sticking points.

Martial arts is a unique fusion of timeless wisdom and modern innovation. The fundamentals may be eternal, but how we apply them evolves constantly. That’s why continued education—especially from subject matter experts—is essential to staying sharp, inspired, and effective.

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting Adam Wardzinski for a seminar at our academy. Adam is not just a fan favorite; he’s one of the best competitors in the world today. His mastery of the butterfly guard and pressure passing system is a brilliant example of how traditional concepts can be sharpened into elite-level tools. His insights gave our students an elevated perspective on positional control and attacking strategy—gems that will continue to influence our training room long after the seminar ended.

Just last week, I had the rare opportunity to spend several days training with Justin “J Flo” Flores. J Flo is a legend in the grappling world—a former Olympic-level judoka, elite wrestling coach, and trusted corner for UFC champions. His instruction in takedowns, foot sweeps, and transitional throws was nothing short of world-class. More importantly, it was accessible and immediately applicable to the way we train and compete.

What makes these experiences so impactful isn’t just the techniques—they’re the transmission of deep understanding from people who’ve spent decades immersed in their craft. The details, timing, mindset, and training methodology all matter—and they elevate everyone who comes into contact with them.

Our goal at Quest is to pass that elevation directly on to you. Whether you're interested in competition, self-defense, or simply becoming the best version of yourself, our mission is to provide you with the highest-quality instruction available. The lessons learned from Adam and J Flo are already being integrated into our classes, sharpening the skills of every student who walks through our doors.

Progress is a team effort. It requires humility, curiosity, and the willingness to learn from those who’ve walked the path ahead of us.

We’re honored to keep bringing that kind of guidance to Chapel Hill—and we’re excited to keep growing, together.
