Mountain Quest 2025: Celebrating 25 Years of Tradition, Training, and Transformation

This year marked a historic milestone—the 25th Mountain Quest, hosted by Quest Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense. Mountain Quest has always been more than just a martial arts event; it’s a gathering of dedicated practitioners, teachers, and seekers who come together to train hard, embrace the elements, and deepen their connection to the martial path.

Incredible Presenters and Teachers

The 25th anniversary featured an inspiring lineup of instructors who brought decades of wisdom, skill, and experience to the mountain:

  • An-Shu Stephen K. Hayes – founder of To-Shin Do and pioneering martial artist

  • Hardee Hakutoshi Merritt – head instructor of Quest Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense

  • Bryan Toutoshi Griffin – head instructor of Raleigh Quest

  • Scott Akitoshi Bragg – head instructor of Orlando TSD Club and Boulder Quest Dojo

  • Johanna Meitoshi Norris – Cincinnati Quest Dojo

  • Dr. Richard Sears

  • Rick Yutoshi Hansen

  • Brett Suitoshi Moran

  • Justin Deitoshi Panza

Each teacher shared unique perspectives and training, helping make the 25th Mountain Quest a true celebration of martial arts knowledge.

Training in the Mountains

Friday began with a Yamabushi meditation hike through the trails of Shin Togakure, culminating in a grounding experience by the Mountain River.

Saturday and Sunday brought intense outdoor training sessions. Despite the wet and muddy conditions, the energy was high and the lessons unforgettable. The environment reminded us that martial arts training is about adaptation—embracing both the challenge and the growth that comes with it.

Graduation and Belt Presentations

One of the highlights of Mountain Quest 2025 was the Saturday night graduation inside the house dojo. Sixteen candidates demonstrated their skills with excellence and heart.

The belt presentations took place in a rare moment of clear skies on the side of the mountain—a fitting backdrop for an event built on perseverance and tradition.

Gratitude and Community

Events like Mountain Quest don’t happen without community. Special thanks go out to:

  • All of the presenters who generously shared their knowledge

  • Every student who trained, tested, and pushed themselves to new levels

  • The logistical team, especially Ms. Rachel, for keeping everything running smoothly

  • Everyone who helped clear Hurricane Helene’s storm damage, ensuring the mountain trails and training areas were open and ready for us

Your dedication made the 25th Mountain Quest unforgettable.

Looking Ahead

Mountain Quest continues to be a cornerstone event for our community—where tradition meets truth, where training is real, and where martial artists come together to grow. Congratulations again to everyone who graduated, and thank you to all who were part of this historic 25th year.

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Mountain Quest 2026 and beyond.
